A50 PROJECT REPORT / A50 Committee Mail

Afterword

The Steering Committee would like to thank all the people involved in the various committees, namely, Fund Raising, A50 Caravan, Publications, Scholarship and the A50 Tokyo Ceremony, for their hard work and dedication. The Steering Committee met 44 times and, prior to that, 8 preparatory meetings also were held.
A number of volunteers contributed their time in various capacities. These are the people who had a strong desire to say thank you America. They ranged in age from university students to retired people. Their involvement is greatly appreciated. Deep appreciation goes to former Vice President Dan Quayle, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and various other dignitaries who made this ceremony a success.
The spirit of A50 will not end at the completion of the various projects. We hope that the younger generations of both countries will continue their effort in strengthening US-Japan relations which could be one of the keys to the stability of our global society.
Some of us in the Steering Committee seriously think that a ÒStatue of PeaceÓ should be presented to the U.S. Pacific coast to match the Statue of Liberty in the East. This statue could be a symbol of friendship bridging between the US and the Asian countries, further promoting East-West relations.
Is it just a simple coincidence that A50 took place just 3 days prior to the September 11 terrorist attack? People who were involved in the A50 activities hoped to represent Japan in joining forces with the American people to confront the new challenges of the future.
Last but not least, we salute the late Ambassador Mike Mansfield, the late Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita, the late Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and the late former diplomat Toshiro Shimanouchi who helped make A50 a success.
