A50 PROJECT REPORT / A50 Committee Mail

Foreword

DURING THE PERIOD of postwar recovery in Japan, the United States provided various forms of support and cooperation that were indispensable and invaluable to Japan's new departure and development. Beginning with humanitarian assistance, such as food and medical treatment, the introduction of democracy, educational system reform, industrial revival, and the opening of the US market to Japan followed.
In the first year of the new century on September 8,2001, which marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty that brought our nation back into the international community, the A50 participants would like to take this occasion to express our heartfelt appreciation towards the United States. Furthermore, it is part of our A50 initiative to encourage an even stronger bond between the United States and Japan in the future.
We have successfully completed three of our activities, including a scholarship program, the publication of a history on postwar US-Japan relations, and a ceremony. However, one significant pillar of A50-tbe A50 Caravan-was regrettably canceled part way through the program due to the occurrence of the September 11th terrorist attacks on the United States. Nevertheless, we would like to report on each of the meaningful accomplishments that was completed during the first part of the scheduled Caravan program.
The A50 initiative was implemented with the strong approval of various participants and the devoted efforts of many cooperators and volunteers. In addition, with respect to funding, despite Japan's long economic stagnation, we were able to carry out our goals thanks to financial contributions from numerous businesses, organizations, and individuals.
As the A50 project report has been completed, I would like to express my deep appreciation again to all of those who cooperated to make this a significant project a great success.
