A50 Project Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the
Signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty
A Japanese Initiative

As the people of Japan reflect upon our postwar recovery, and look ahead towards the next century, we should remind ourselves of the generous acts of support and cooperation that we received from the United States since the end of the war. The American people not only provided us with food and medical services during the difficult early years, but the United States also helped to introduce democracy, develop Japan's educational system and rebuild our industries, providing generous financial assistance and opening its markets to Japanese products. These acts of friendship were instrumental in helping Japan make a new start, and ensuring our continued progress.
Over the past half-century, Us-Japan relations have been the cornerstones of Japan's diplomatic engagement with the rest of the world. Cooperation between our two nations has prevailed in every aspect of our relationship, from politics, national security, trade and economic relations to scientific, technological and cultural exchanges. This cooperative partnership is rightly perceived as the most important bilateral relationship in the world today. Together, the United States and Japan can play an enormous role to bring about worldwide peace and future prosperity.
The year 2001, the first year of the new century, also marks the 50th anniversary of Japan's formal readmission to the international community, with the signing of the San Francisco peace Treaty on September 8,1951. We hope to make this anniversary an occasion to reinforce and renew the mutual trust between our two nations.    To this end, we, the undersigned, propose a commemorative effort on behalf of the Japanese people, to be known as A50. "A" stands for Appreciation, and America, while "50" stands for the 50th Anniversary of the San Francisco Peace Treaty, the 50 states of the US, and friendship for the next 50 years. We strongly encourage others to participate in and support this commemorative project.
