Program Activities

In order to express Japan's appreciation to the U.S. for its support during the postwar period, to promote mutual trust, and to deepen the understanding of the importance of bilateral relations, especially between the youth of both nations, A50 initiative undertook four major program activities, which are outlined below. These activities included a commemorative ceremony, a scholarship program, publications on the history of postwar relations, and the A50 Caravan. It is hoped that these initiatives will trigger continuing new projects and that the youth of both nations will find ways to contribute to the wellbeing of our global society.

1. A50 Ceremony
An A50 Commemorative Ceremony took place in Tokyo on September 8, 2001. In addition, key members A50 then took part in a celebration held in San Francisco.

2. Publication of History on Postwar relations
The publications were headed by Akira Iriye, Professor of Harvard University, on the American side and by Chiharu Hosoya, Professor of the International University of Japan, on the Japanese side. Versions were published in both Japanese and English.

3. A50 Fulbright Scholarship Program
Establishment of an A50 scholarship program for American youth to develop their future leadership capacity. Ten A50-Fulbright Scholarships are awarded annually over a ten-year period. The Fulbright Commission in Japan worked closely with A50, including screening and placing candidates.

4. A50 Caravan Project
The Caravan was drafted with the cooperation of the Japan Center for International Exchange ( JCIE ) in Tokyo and National Association of Japan-America Societies ( NAJAS ) in Washington, DC. Fifteen teams, each consisting of three members to represent different generations, started their activities by attending the celebration in San Francisco organized by the Japan Society of Northern California. Every team then visited various locations to attend dialogue sessions with U.S. citizens to be hosted by local organizations.
